More Information About Yorkshire Terrier Puppies

Yorkshire Terriers were first recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885 and are a member of the Toy Group. Average Yorkie puppies will weigh between 4 and 7 pounds when fully grown. Teacup Yorkie puppies may only reach a fraction of that. Yorkshire Terriers can make great companion dogs, they travel well and can adapt to nearly any living conditions. According to the AKC, Yorkshire Terrier puppies have become one of the most popular breeds of puppies in the United States.

The Yorkshire Terrier is named after the city in which it originated, Yorkshire, England where they were used to control rats in textile factories. Local dogs such as the Leeds Terrier were crossed with Scottish terriers including the Maltese, the Dandie Dinmont, the Skye Terrier and the Manchester Terrier. Originally, Yorkshire Terrier puppies were not the teacup size puppies we have today. Smaller Yorkie puppies we sought out by women to carry as fashion accessories. These were bred with other tiny puppies and over generations, we have the tiny lines of Teacup Yorkshire Terrier puppies we have today.

Yorkshire Terrier puppies can grow up to be great watchdogs, as they seem to be oblivious of their small size. But if not kept in check, their feisty temperament will have the Yorkie running the house in no time. By nature, the Yorkshire Terrier wants to follow the pack leader, which should be its owner. However, if the owner doesn’t rise to the occasion, the Yorkie had no choice but to become the pack leader. Like with crying babies, many owners end up at the mercy of the yapping Yorkie.

Because of their small size, a Yorkshire Terrier puppy can get much of its needed exercise in a small home or apartment. This should never take the place of regular (daily if possible) walks. Structured, leashed walks, during which the Yorkie is led by the owner, keep the puppy’s submissive place in the home. If your Yorkshire Terrier puppy is an endless ball of energy in the home, it is time to increase the quantity and duration of the walks.
